#SixforSunday: Heart-wrenching Endings to a Series

I hope you all are having a great weekend! #SixforSunday is a weekly meme hosted by Steph @ A Little But a Lot. This week is all about the most heart-wrenching series enders. I think we’ve all read a book that put us in a funk when finishing it because it was so melancholy. If you want to a see a complete list of the books that have made me cry, check out my previous post!

257391881. THE BOOK THIEF
Anyone who has read this book knows how it ends and it is heartrending. I mean, a book about World War II narrated by Death is not likely to be all sunshines and rainbows, but how dare you make me love this character throughout the book only to stab me in the back at the very end?

327024872. THE BIRD AND THE BLADE
This story is a retelling of sorts of the Italian opera, Turandot, so I knew going into this book that the ending was going to hurt. I had even read the other reviews to prepare myself the inevitable hearbreak. Spoiler alert: it didn’t work. The ending was painful enough to knock the breath out of you for days.

40940121._SY475_3. BRIDGE TO TERABITHIA
I think this book traumatized me as a child because most of the time I completely forget it even exists. What I do remember, however, is being so enthralled by the story and then getting to the end and feeling devastated. This might be the first book I read that didn’t have a happy ending.

173839184. ALLEGIANT
What the hell was up with that ending? One the one hand, kudos for Veronica Roth for pulling off one of the most unexpected endings to a popular YA series, but on the other hand that death really felt like it was done for shock value and served no other purpose. She really deserved better than the ending she got.

367395535. FURY
When I finished this book, I was both distraught and furious. There is no gratification for the readers with this ending. All three books were spent hoping for two characters to finally realize their feelings for each other, only for it to happen PAGES before one of those characters dies…in the last chapter, no less. There’s no sense of closure for the characters or the readers.

521667866. EMPIRE OF GOLD
Okay, I’m taking some extreme liberties here because I haven’t actually read this yet. But unfortunately spoilers came across my Goodreads timeline about the ending, which led me to dig for more spoilers. And I am not okay with the ending or the fate of my favorite character. Just thinking about it makes me profoundly sad so I can only imagine how I’ll feel when I actually read it.

What book endings are the most heart-wrenching to you? Have you read any of the books I listed? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Great list! I agree with The Book Thief, the ending made me cry! 😢 I am fine with the ending of Allegiant but the book as a whole was just too convoluted 😅 I love sad books- I don’t read them too often but I love them! I think the best sad endings are The 5 People You Meet in Heaven duology by Mitch Albom. It’s sad (I cried a lot) but also very beautiful.

    1. Yeah, Allegiant was not a strong finish to an otherwise great series. I actually don’t mind a sad ending, as long as it’s done well! The Book Thief and The Bird and the Blade are two of my absolute favorite books because they’re capable of causing so much deep emotion 💕
