Top Ten Tuesday: Books I’d Love to See on Netflix

Hello everyone! Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week the theme is books we’d love to have adapted in a Netflix movie or series. I was working on a blog post very similar to this theme so luckily I had already put in some good thought into which books I would love to see on Netflix!

IIBH_Reveal.indd1. IF I’M BEING HONEST
Netflix romcoms are the best, and I’m not even sorry about it. There are so many great YA romantic comedy books that I think would make a fantastic movie, but one of the one’s I’d love to see adapted the most (and that I think would be a huge hit) is If I’m Being Honest

278336702. DARK MATTER
“I would love to see a movie adaptation of this, because if done correctly, I think it would be a big hit,” –Me, in my review.
This book is a complete mind-fuck. It would make such a tremendous thriller movie because the reader is taken on such a wild ride throughout the book.

438856733. 10 BLIND DATES
When I read this book, I said that it was perfect for anyone who enjoys holiday Hallmark movies. But you know what? It would also make a great holiday movie. It’s cute, it’s heartwarming, and it would be the perfect feel-good story for the holidays.

256144924. SALT TO THE SEA
I would absolutely love to see a movie adaptation of this book. The story is based on the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustlaff, which had the largest loss of life of any maritime disaster in history. Never heard of it? Neither had I until I read this book. It gets hardly any attention–especially compared to the Titanic–so I would love a movie adaptation or at the very least, a historical documentary.

350687055. THE POPPY WAR
Listen, if I could choose any book or book series to be made into a Netflix series, it would be this one. PLEASE NETFLIX, GIVE ME THIS ADAPTATION. Honestly, if these books were ever adapted into a movie or series, I would literally die (just like [redacted] in the burning god 😩).

Untitled-16. THE PRISONER’S WIFE
This would make such a good World War II film! It’s an amazing book and I would love to see it adapted into a movie. Historical fiction movies always tend to do really well and I believe this book as all the makings for a real hit. It’s got romance, suspense, action, friendship and a message of hope and perseverance.

49366204._SX318_SY475_7. THE BEST LAID PLANS
Another YA romantic comedy that I think would be a fantastic candidate for a Netflix adaptation. Like I said in my review in February, “If I could choose only one book from this year to have made into a movie it would be The Best Laid Plans (@Netflix I’m looking at you).”

52894698._SX318_SY475_8. GODDESS THE MACHINE
Only the first book has been released, and already I know this would make an amazing sci-fi/apocalyptic Netflix series. The book is perfect for fans of The 100, which is in its last season, so this is the perfect opportunity to fill in that gap and pull in those who loved the show with something new, yet similar.

178027249. THE HUSBAND’S SECRET
I’m hoping that since Big Little Lies is such a huge hit on HBO, one day my dreams will come true and The Husband’s Secret will also be adapted as either a movie or series. I actually love this book way more than Big Little Lies. When you finally learn the husband’s secret and everything that goes along with it? 🤯

18781110. THE MEDIATOR
These books were hot shit when I was in middle school/high school. To this day, they remain one of my favorite series of books. They would be so much fun adapted to a Netflix series! A smart, snarky teenage mediator who can balance schoolwork, hot boys, and sending murderous ghosts back to the beyond? Suze could be the next Buffy if given the chance.

Five Netflix Shows to Binge this Summer

Hello everyone! Summer is nearly upon us, and so I thought I’d share some of my favorite Netflix shows that I’ve seen recently that I think would make great summer binge-watching.

SCHITT’S CREEK

PREMISE: When rich video-store magnate Johnny Rose and his family suddenly find themselves broke, they are forced to leave their pampered lives to regroup in Schitt’s Creek.

WHY IT’S WORTH A WATCH: I cannot recommend this show enough! I’ve already binge watched all the seasons twice in the span of a month. The cast and characters are what makes Schitt’s Creek such an fantastic, hilarious show. The actors not only have amazing chemistry with one another, but they really give life to their characters. Alexis and David have the most realistic sibling relationship I’ve ever seen portrayed on TV. Another great aspect? The episodes are only 20 minutes in length, which is perfect for someone with a short attention span like me.

SEX EDUCATION

PREMISE: A teenage boy with a sex therapist mother teams up with a high school classmate to set up an underground sex therapy clinic at school.

WHY IT’S WORTH A WATCH: If the premise doesn’t make you want to watch the show for the hilarious shenanigans bound to occur, I don’t know what will. The series tackles teenage sexuality, the lack of sex education in schools, and the importance of interpersonal relationships and friendships in ways that are hilarious, awkward, and realistic. It can be a bit raunchy at times, but it also has plenty of moments that are sweet and poignant.

GOOD GIRLS

PREMISE: Three suburban mothers suddenly find themselves in desperate circumstances and decide to stop playing it safe and risk everything to take their power back.

WHY IT’S WORTH A WATCH: You know that friend that everyone has that always seems to make bad decisions, which have negative consequences but they still continue to make even more bad decisions because of those consequences and yet we love them anyway? That’s what watching this show is like. We follow three friends begin a life of crime because of the domino effect of their first bad decision. Viewers might face the same moral dilemma I did, in that even though they’re partaking in criminal activity, I still wanted them to succeed. This series perfectly combines the genres of thriller + comedy to create a totally binge-worthy show that makes me feel a little better about my own life choices.

WORKING MOMS

PREMISE: Four very different thirty-something working mothers and friends try to balance their jobs, family life and love life in modern day Toronto, Canada.

WHY IT’S WORTH A WATCH: I’m not a mother, but even I could appreciate the relatable humor in this female-centered show. It’s honest, realistic, and highlights the sometimes-hilarious-sometimes-not struggles many women have in balancing parenting, marriage, and work. The show deals with a lot of the cultural expectations and unspoken pressures many women face in a light-hearted, comedic way. And in between the laughs, the series touches on the more serious issues following childbirth, such as postpartum depression. Again, I’m not a mom myself, but as a woman even I could appreciate the show’s humor!

DEAD TO ME

PREMISE: A hotheaded widow searching for the hit-and-run driver who mowed down her husband befriends an eccentric optimist who isn’t quite what she seems.

WHY IT’S WORTH A WATCH: This show is full of some funny scenes, but it also has some really sad moments, as well as a few well-placed plot twists. Christina Applegate is absolutely amazing in her role as a new widow on a quest to find the driver who killed her husband in a hit-and-run. The series is unique in that you start to form a bond and a liking to most of the characters…even the ones you shouldn’t.

Top Ten Tuesday: Spooky Shows to Watch on Netflix this Halloween 🦇

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by The Broke and the Bookish and now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl. Today was a Halloween freebie, and so I’ve put together a list of ten spooky shows perfect for a marathon night of watching tv!

MV5BOTQyMDYwNDMyOV5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMjM4NTIzNjM@._V1_1. CHILLING ADVENTURES OF SABRINA
The first season has just been released on Netflix, and I’m so ready for it. The first episode really sets the tone for what to expect out of this reboot and it’s a completely different kind of show than Sabrine the Teenage Witch – but in a good way. It’s a lot darker, grimmer, and definitely creepier. I’m excited to watch the rest of the episodes.

71vJ3kPE67L._SY679_2. STRANGER THINGS
Why is season three taking so long?! I binge-watched the entire first season last year in one weekend and had absolutely no regrets. Stranger Things is a show unlike any other on Netflix (or anywhere else) and it’s popularity is earned. The creepy/mysterious story coupled with the 80s nostalgia and eerily perfect music makes it easy to watch episode after episode.

MV5BMTU4NzA4MDEwNF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMTQxODYzNjM@._V1_3. THE HAUNTING OF HOUSE HILL
I haven’t had the chance to watch this yet, but I’ve been hearing such great things about it and a lot of my coworkers have recommended it to me recently. From what I’ve gathered, Haunting of House Hill is a reimagining of the Shirley Jackson book by the same name. Since this show skips the dark thriller genre and heads straight into horror territory, this won’t be something I’ll be watching alone!

MV5BMzE3MDk0ODkwM15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzA5NTk5MTI@._V1_4. THE MIST
I watched the film years ago when it first came out, and I was excited to see that Stephen King’s novel was being adapted into a show as well. Unfortunately, it was cancelled after season one, but that just means it will be quicker to get through all of the episodes!

5. PENNY DREADFUL
Another show I’ve yet to watch, but that has been highly recommend to me by friends. I’ve always been intrigue by the show and it’s synopsis sounds right up my alley. Penny Dreadful is a psychological thriller featuring classical literary characters – such as Dorian Gray and Dr. Frankenstein – in a gothic Victorian England setting.

14706800_1144566875624742_492185822543175845_o6. BATES MOTEL
I have to admit: I’ve never seen Psycho. I haven’t watch Bates Motel yet, but everything I’ve seen and heard about this prequel show sounds equal parts intriguing and thrilling. Backstories to villains are always interesting: who wouldn’t want to learn more about the twisted history of Norman Bates?

Riverdale-season-3-15363817. RIVERDALE
If you prefer a little murder mystery along with a good dose of high school drama, then Riverdale is the show for you. Compared to the comics, the show and characters are a lot darker and grittier, and I think it’s really well done. From suspense and mystery, to love triangles and budding friendships, there’s a little bit of everything here.

MV5BNTEwYzNiMGUtNzRlYS00MTMzLTliNzgtOGUxZGZiNThlNWYwXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyMjYwNDA2MDE@._V1_8. BLACK MIRROR
The thing I love best about this show is that each episode has it’s own story. Black Mirror is a thought-provoking show about the consequences of modern-and future-technology. Not all of the episodes are frightening per se, but most have some sort of eerie, suspenseful quality to them. The scariest part of the show is just how realistic some of the situations could be.

81ju7zSjLwL._SL1500_9. THE WALKING DEAD
Is anything more Halloween than zombies? This show has been running for a long time (long enough for me to loose interest) but the first few seasons were so good. Murder, suspense, morally grey characters, and a fight for survival against not only zombies but other humans? What more could you ask for?

MV5BODhiODk3NWEtZmNiYi00N2NlLThlN2YtN2VkYTYyMjQxMWEzXkEyXkFqcGdeQXVyNjU2NjA5NjM@._V1_10. THE VAMPIRE DIARIES / THE ORIGINALS
Vampires are almost synonymous with the word Halloween, so of course I had to include them somewhere on the list. I’ve never seen The Originals, but I was always a big fan of The Vampire Diaries. Featuring suspense, romance, magic, and lots of supernatural creatures, this a great low-key show to watch.
