Behind the Screen: A Book Blogger Tag

I’m here with another book tag! Thank you so much to Adrianna at For the Love of Books for tagging me in this! I loved reading her answers and I hope you all enjoy mine!

When did you start blogging and what was your first review?

My very first post was in May of 2016 and it was a review of Any Duchess Will Do by Tessa Dare. I wanted to start my blog off with a bang (ha, see what I did there!) and review a book I had recently finished and loved! 

Who/what inspired you to start blogging?

A bunch of the people I interact with the most on Goodreads had blogs and their posts always looked so fun. I decided I wanted to give it a go!

What is a blog-related goal that you have?

My short term blog goal is to get to 500 followers. I know this number is nothing to a lot of people but for me that’s a big deal!

What is one thing you wish someone told you about blogging?

It’s a lot of work. Seriously, on the days I’m not working, I spend most of my time writing reviews and other posts (when I’m not reading). 

What was your biggest blog-related accomplishment?

I think the first time I was contacted and asked to host a stop for a book tour! I was so humbled and thankful that they thought to reach out to me. It was for a book from a series I enjoyed which made it even more special!

What types of posts do you enjoy writing?

I love doing list posts like Top Ten Tuesday and Top 5 Wednesdays! They’re always so much fun and I feel like I get the most interaction with my followers with those posts. 

Where do you usually blog? What does your setup look like?

I blog either on when I’m sitting on my couch upstairs, or in the comfy chair in the living room.  

What was your last 5-star read?

Sadie by Courtney Summers. It’s a gripping read!

What was your last 1-star read?

I usually don’t rate books I DNF, but the last 1-star I gave a book was Roar by Cora Carmack. I didn’t make it very far into the book and knew I had to stop. Definitely not for me. 

What are three words that make you pick up a book?

Fantasy, Adventure, Enemies-to-Lovers

What is your Hogwarts House?

My heart says Slytherin, but my head says Ravenclaw.

What is your favorite reading environment?

I love reading on my couch in the library, especially in the evenings and getting cozy with a warm blanket. I also love reading in bed – there’s nothing better than that! 

What advice would you give to new bloggers?

Be patient. It takes awhile to really get your feet under you when you first start blogging, but once you get in a rhythm it becomes much easier.

Be social. Don’t be afraid to comment and interact with other bloggers, twitter peeps, and bookstagrammers! That’s the easiest way to grow a following, plus it’s the best way to have fun and make friends!

Be you. Don’t feel like you have to do something or read something just because it’s popular or you feel like all the other blogs are doing it. Read what you like, write what you like. 

The Cookie Book Tag

Happy Monday! I worked all weekend so I plan to spend my day off today catching up on some reading. Kelly @ Another Book in the Wall tagged me to do The Cookie Book Tag and the questions looked so fun! Check out Kelly’s blog; she’s amazing and I love her posts! 

CHOCOLATE CHIP: A CLASSIC BOOK THAT YOU LOVE OR REALLY ENJOYED

The Iliad by Homer. I’ve actually read this twice – both for school – and I loved it both times! As a huge Greek mythology nerd this has everything I love about those ancient stories; meddling gods and goddesses, war and action, and a whole crew of famous Greek heroes. 

THIN MINTS: A FANDOM THAT YOU WANT TO JOIN AND/OR A HYPED BOOK YOU WANT TO READ

I mentioned this is one of my last posts, but I really want to read the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown. I’ve heard and read so many great things about this series and I hope I get around to reading them soon!

SHORTBREAD: AN AUTHOR YOU CAN’T GET ENOUGH OF

Leigh Bardugo. I’ve called her the Boss-Ass Queen of Writing before and I stand by that statement. Her writing is amazing, her stories are engaging and captivating, and her characters are dynamic and lovable.

SAMOAS: AN EMOTIONAL ROLLERCOASTER

A Short History of the Girl Next Door by Jared Reck. This book absolutely wrecked my heart (ha. see what I did there?) It was very easy to feel connected with the protagonist, and therefore I felt all of his emotions while reading: anger, embarrassment, heartache, grief. I both laughed and ugly-cried while reading this.

OREOS: A BOOK WHOSE COVER WAS BETTER THAN THE STORY OR VICE VERSA

Lady Helen and the Dark Days Club by Alison Goodman. These books are amazing and I can’t wait for the last book to come out in the fall! There are a few different editions of these covers but good lord, none of them are pretty to look at. I actually bought my copies from Dymocks because the Australian editions are not as bad. 

TAGALONGS: A BOOK THAT WASN’T WHAT YOU EXPECTED

The Forgetting by Sharon Cameron. As part of the plot, there’s a few reveals about the story that show that not everything is what it seems. There’s one twist that I was definitely not expecting that changes the reader’s perception of the setting and the story quite a bit. 

SNICKERDOODLES: A BOOK YOU MAY NEVER STOP LOVING

I’m going to go with A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin. I simply cannot get enough of those books or the characters or all of the side stories and histories. Similar to the Harry Potter series, these books are going to stay with me forever.

The End of Year Book Tag

I can’t believe it’s already December guys! Is it just me or does it seem like each year gets shorter and shorter? I found this book tag a while ago (I can’t remember from where exactly) and thought this would be a great tag for nearing the end of the year!

ARE THERE ANY BOOKS YOU STARTED THIS YEAR THAT YOU NEED TO FINISH?

In addition to the many books still left on my TBR for the year, there were quite a few that I never got around to finishing that I wanted to. Windwitch (The Witchlands #2) by Susan Dennard. I loved Truthwitch but I just couldn’t get into Windwitch when it released. I had hoped to come back to it later but never got around to it.

DO YOU HAVE AN AUTUMNAL BOOK TO TRANSITION INTO THE END OF THE YEAR?

I don’t have a go-to book for transitioning towards the end of the year, but An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson was the perfect fall book to get me into the mood. 

IS THERE A NEW RELEASE YOU’RE STILL WAITING FOR?

I was waiting for Immortal Reign (Falling Kingdoms #6) by Morgan Rhodes but apparently I missed the memo that the release date was pushed back until February 😩

WHAT ARE THREE BOOKS YOU WANT TO READ BEFORE THE END OF THE YEAR?

I’m hoping I’ll be able to finish more than three more books before the end of the year so I can accomplish my Goodreads Reading Challenge, but realistically it probably won’t happen. The three I really want to finish though are:

 

IS THERE A BOOK YOU THINK COULD STILL SHOCK YOU AND BECOME YOUR FAVOURITE BOOK OF THE YEAR?

I think I’ve read all my favorite books of the year!

I started my 2018 TBR list way back in January, and it seems to be growing larger every week! Hopefully I’ll be able to cross more off the list than I was this year. 

 

Unpopular Opinions Book Tag

Hello everyone! I’m finally getting back into the swing of things: I’m starting to get out of my reading slump and I’m writing more reviews and blog posts. I don’t know what was going on, but I’m glad to be moving out of whatever funk I’ve been in these past couple of months! I’ve seen a few other blogs do this Unpopular Opinions tag and I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share my thoughts!

A POPULAR BOOK OR SERIES YOU DIDN’T LIKE

The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater. I read the first couple of books in the series and didn’t like them, and I still don’t get all the hype. 

A POPULAR BOOK OR SERIES EVERYONE ELSE SEEMS TO HATE BUT YOU LOVE

Paper Princess by Erin Watt. I think this book is really a love-it-or-hate-it, which for me was a love. I made the mistake of starting it just before bed and didn’t stop until I had finished it in the early hours of the morning!

AN OTP YOU DON’T LIKE

Rowan/Aelin in the Throne of Glass series. I won’t delve too much into this but it mostly stems from my hatred of Rowan as a terrible character and a toxic love interest.

A POPULAR GENRE YOU HARDLY REACH FOR

I was going to say YA Contemporary, but I’ve been reading a lot more of those recently, so I’ll say graphic novels. They just never really interested me. 

A POPULAR CHARACTER THAT YOU DON’T LIKE

Severus Snape from Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling. I never, ever liked him and probably never will. 

A POPULAR AUTHOR THAT YOU CAN’T SEEM TO GET INTO

Sarah J. Maas. Her books are not for me.

A POPULAR TROPE YOU’RE TIRED OF SEEING

I don’t know why this is becoming such a theme recently, but villainous characters as love interests-especially in the YA genre. I’m not talking morally grey characters; I’m talking about characters that are truly horrible, or that have physically/emotionally been abusive towards the main character and yet the fandom and/or author decides to make them the love interest anyway. How can you not see how toxic those relationships are and then market them to young, impressionable teenagers as “romance”? I could go on and on about this but I’ll leave it at that.

A POPULAR SERIES YOU HAVE NO INTEREST IN READING

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin.

(Although, ever since season 7 ended, I’ve been toying with the idea of possibly trying to read them.)

The saying goes “the book is always better than the movie,” but what movie or tv show adaptation do you prefer more than the book?

Atonement by Ian McEwan. I loved the book but the movie is just so good.

 

The New York Times “By the Book” Tag

I’ve been itching to do another book tag, especially since I’ve been in such a reading slump lately, and the first few questions really caught my eye! I first saw this tag on Thrice Read’s blog a while ago and it seemed really fun!

WHAT BOOK IS ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND RIGHT NOW?

Well, technically, my Kindle is on my nightstand. But I’m currently reading The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding by Alexandra Bracken and Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff. Like I said, I’ve been in a reading slump lately so I’ve been really unmotivated to read anything, which is a shame because my ARCs are starting to pile up. 

WHAT WAS THE LAST TRULY GREAT BOOK YOU READ?

The Dark of the Moon by E.S. Bell was the last book I gave five stars to. Not only that, but I wrote a pretty long review gushing all about it which is pretty telling about my feelings for a book. 

IF YOU COULD MEET ANY WRITER – DEAD OR ALIVE – WHO WOULD IT BE? AND WHAT WOULD YOU WANT TO KNOW?

This is one of the questions that drew me to this tag. Without a doubt, George R. R. Martin. SPOILERS to those who haven’t watched season 7 of Game of Thrones yet! There are quite a few questions I would like to pick Mr. Martin’s brain about, but mostly: please, please tell me Jon’s real name is not actually Aegon in the books 😒. Also, Jonsa is totally going to happen, right?!

WHAT BOOKS MIGHT WE BE SURPRISED TO FIND ON YOUR SHELF?

Okay, because I’m a huge nerd, I actually have a two different bookshelves. I have my regular bookshelves and then I have a smaller bookshelf which is where I keep all my “nonfiction” books. Mostly, it’s made up of textbooks I’ve kept over the years and a whole ton of books about different world mythologies/folklore. 

HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE YOUR PERSONAL LIBRARY?

I like things to be neat and orderly, so my books are all in alphabetical order by author. 

WHAT BOOK HAVE YOU ALWAYS MEANT TO READ AND HAVEN’T GOTTEN AROUND TO YET?

There are a few books that would fit to answer this question, but I think I’ll go with The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman. I’ve started it so many times but can never seem to get past the first chapter.

DISAPPOINTING, OVERRATED, JUST NOT GOOD: WHAT BOOK DID YOU FEEL YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO LIKE BUT DIDN’T?

Hmm. If anyone has ever ventured onto my Tumblr, it’s quite clear how I feel about the Throne of Glass/A Court of Thorns and Roses books. I’ll just keep it simple and say Sarah J. Maas’ books are not for me (anymore). 

WHAT KIND OF STORIES ARE YOU DRAWN TO? ANY YOU STAY CLEAR OF?

I’m definitely drawn to YA/Adult Fantasy, Historical Fiction, and Historical Romance. I also love a good mythology/fairy-tale retelling. I try to stay away from contemporary, although there are a good number that I’ve really enjoyed. There are certain tropes, though, that I’m a sucker for that will make me pick up a book. 

IF YOU COULD REQUIRE THE PRESIDENT TO READ ONE BOOK, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

There are so many different ways to answer this question but I don’t feel like being too political so I’m just going to skip it. 

WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO READ NEXT?

Oh gosh, there are so many books downloaded on my Kindle right now. I’ll probably read Warcross by Marie Lu since I won a copy of the book and I can’t wait for it!
