The New York Times “By the Book” Tag

I’ve been itching to do another book tag, especially since I’ve been in such a reading slump lately, and the first few questions really caught my eye! I first saw this tag on Thrice Read’s blog a while ago and it seemed really fun!

WHAT BOOK IS ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND RIGHT NOW?

Well, technically, my Kindle is on my nightstand. But I’m currently reading The Dreadful Tale of Prosper Redding by Alexandra Bracken and Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff. Like I said, I’ve been in a reading slump lately so I’ve been really unmotivated to read anything, which is a shame because my ARCs are starting to pile up.

WHAT WAS THE LAST TRULY GREAT BOOK YOU READ?

The Dark of the Moon by E.S. Bell was the last book I gave five stars to. Not only that, but I wrote a pretty long review gushing all about it which is pretty telling about my feelings for a book.

IF YOU COULD MEET ANY WRITER – DEAD OR ALIVE – WHO WOULD IT BE? AND WHAT WOULD YOU WANT TO KNOW?

This is one of the questions that drew me to this tag. Without a doubt, George R. R. Martin. SPOILERS to those who haven’t watched season 7 of Game of Thrones yet! There are quite a few questions I would like to pick Mr. Martin’s brain about, but mostly: please, please tell me Jon’s real name is not actually Aegon in the books 😒. Also, Jonsa is totally going to happen, right?!

WHAT BOOKS MIGHT WE BE SURPRISED TO FIND ON YOUR SHELF?

Okay, because I’m a huge nerd, I actually have a two different bookshelves. I have my regular bookshelves and then I have a smaller bookshelf which is where I keep all my “nonfiction” books. Mostly, it’s made up of textbooks I’ve kept over the years and a whole ton of books about different world mythologies/folklore.

HOW DO YOU ORGANIZE YOUR PERSONAL LIBRARY?

I like things to be neat and orderly, so my books are all in alphabetical order by author.

WHAT BOOK HAVE YOU ALWAYS MEANT TO READ AND HAVEN’T GOTTEN AROUND TO YET?

There are a few books that would fit to answer this question, but I think I’ll go with The Zookeeper’s Wife by Diane Ackerman. I’ve started it so many times but can never seem to get past the first chapter.

DISAPPOINTING, OVERRATED, JUST NOT GOOD: WHAT BOOK DID YOU FEEL YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO LIKE BUT DIDN’T?

Hmm. If anyone has ever ventured onto my Tumblr, it’s quite clear how I feel about the Throne of Glass/A Court of Thorns and Roses books. I’ll just keep it simple and say Sarah J. Maas’ books are not for me (anymore).

WHAT KIND OF STORIES ARE YOU DRAWN TO? ANY YOU STAY CLEAR OF?

I’m definitely drawn to YA/Adult Fantasy, Historical Fiction, and Historical Romance. I also love a good mythology/fairy-tale retelling. I try to stay away from contemporary, although there are a good number that I’ve really enjoyed. There are certain tropes, though, that I’m a sucker for that will make me pick up a book.

IF YOU COULD REQUIRE THE PRESIDENT TO READ ONE BOOK, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

There are so many different ways to answer this question but I don’t feel like being too political so I’m just going to skip it.

WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO READ NEXT?

Oh gosh, there are so many books downloaded on my Kindle right now. I’ll probably read Warcross by Marie Lu since I won a copy of the book and I can’t wait for it!

If anyone else decides to participate in this tag, post a link in the comments, I want to read your answers! I would also love to hear any ideas on how to get out a reading slump! It’s been months and this is the longest slump I’ve ever been in.

Who Am I Book Tag

I saw this over at Thrice Read‘s blog and it looked way too fun to resist! I’ve been too busy to post anything other than book reviews so I thought this would be a good way to change things up a bit!

WHAT IS THE MEANING OF MY NAME?

Breanna: Irish; feminine variant of ‘Brian’ meaning “strong, virtuous, noble, honorable”
Elizabeth: Hebrew; “God is my oath”

WHAT IS MY MYERS-BRIGGS PERSONALITY TYPE?

I was a Psychology major in college, so the amount of times I’ve taken this test is kind of obnoxious. But for some reason I get different results every time! (Link)

Personality Type: Protagonist (ENFJ-T)

“Protagonists are natural-born leaders, full of passion and charisma. Forming around two percent of the population, they are oftentimes our politicians, our coaches and our teachers, reaching out and inspiring others to achieve and to do good in the world. With a natural confidence that begets influence, Protagonists take a great deal of pride and joy in guiding others to work together to improve themselves and their community.”

Strengths:Untitled

  • Tolerant
  • Reliable
  • Charismatic
  • Altruistic
  • Natural Leaders

Weaknesses:

  • Idealistic
  • Too Selfless
  • Too Sensitive
  • Fluctuating Self-Esteem
  • Struggle to make tough decisions

I was very surprised by my results, as I haven’t ever really thought as myself as a leader before. However, after reading through the entire profile, I have to say I agree with almost everything it said, although I don’t think I have ever been called sensitive in my life. It’s sometimes scary how accurate these psychological personality tests can be!

WHAT IS MY ZODIAC SIGN?

I am the best example of a Gemini that you will ever find.

WHAT IS MY HOGWARTS HOUSE?

I have taken the Pottermore test numerous times, not to mention a variety of other personality Hogwarts placement tests, and my results seem to always balance somewhere between Slytherin and Ravenclaw. Because I have a dual-personality (see above lol), I honestly would feel at home in either house and both would be a good fit for me. (Link)

WHAT ARE MY LEARNING STYLES?

  • Visual – 10
  • Aural – 4
  • Read/Write – 10
  • Kinesthetic – 11

I am not surprised at all by these results. I’m a definitely a visual learner and pick up information best with a hands-on approach. (Link)

AM I RIGHT OR LEFT BRAIN DOMINANT?

Neither side is dominant and I use both hemispheres of my brain equally. From the few other times I’ve taken tests similar to this, I’ve always gotten that neither side is dominant as well. (Link)

WHAT IS MY BLOOD TYPE?

This always causes a bit of debate in our family. Both my parents, my brother, and I are all the same blood type: O. However, my mom swears we are all O+ while my dad adamantly believes we’re all universal donors, which would mean we have O- blood. The mystery remains. Although it would be nice to know for sure, for medical/emergency reasons.

WHAT CAREER AM I MEANT TO HAVE?

I was really interested in what result I would get, especially since everyone else seemed to be getting the same thing: writer. My interests are varied and there have always been a number of different career paths that I would have loved to pursue/would have been successful at.

Therapist

“You are a very warm, compassionate and sensitive person. You like to help others in need, and inspire others with your work. You were meant to better people’s lives and make them happier.”

I don’t agree that being a therapist would be my ideal career choice – it was actually one of the few paths for a psychology major that I knew for a fact I didn’t want to pursue. However, the description is pretty accurate for a Physician Assistant as well, which is what I’m currently working towards. (Link)

WHICH DIVERGENT FACTION DO I BELONG IN?

Divergent

“You deviate from the norm. The aptitude test is inconclusive. It cannot determine just one faction for you, Divergent. Your mind is ceaselessly changing. You’re creative, with a strong sense of self, and you have a clear picture of who you are and what you want. You stand out from the crowd. You may pose a threat to the norms of society, but you are unwilling to give into them.”

Once again, my dual-personality strikes. I have too many different facets to be contained into one faction. (Link)

WHAT DOES MY BIRTH ORDER SAY ABOUT ME?

I am the firstborn in our family. Natural leaders, ambitious, and responsible are all traits associated with being the eldest. These all tie-in nicely and are congruent with the results of the other personality types and tests that I’ve shared. (Link)

Now that you’ve all learned a little bit more about me, I’m looking forward to reading other people’s posts! Has anyone done this and gotten surprising results? If anyone does this tag, post a link in the comments, I want to read your answers!

DO YOU HAVE ANY FAVORITE QUOTES? SHARE A FEW.
Oh God, how to choose only a few?!

“He’s more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.” – Emily Brontë, Wuthering Heights

“But if men are the makers and breakers of empires, then women are the makers and breakers of men.” – Kate Quinn, Lady of the Eternal City

“I came here for you. You’re my flag. You’re my nation.” – Leigh Bardugo, Siege and Storm

“I want you to remember that it wouldn’t have made any difference to me. It’s never made any difference to me when it came to you. I’d still pick you. I’ll always pick you.” – Sarah J. Mass, Crown of Midnight

It was way harder than it should have been to only pick a few. I had to restrain myself from posting everything Malyen Oretsev has ever said in The Grisha Trilogy. It was also really hard narrowing down my favorite Kate Quinn quote.

Kate Quinn, Tessa Dare, Jennifer L. Armentrout, J.K. Rowling
